Part One:

Title of Session: Communication Skills for TRs: Taking the Stress out of Stressful Situations, Interactions and Conversations

Session Description:
Within the scope of practice of TR therapists may find themselves having interactions with clients, family members or colleagues in stressful situations where this “stress” is directed at them.  Participants in this course will learn how to recognize difficult individuals, become familiar with the subtle and not so subtle tactics they use, and learn how to skillfully disarm disagreeable people so your personal and professional relationships are less stressful and more enjoyable. The presenter will offer advice for handling unpleasant exchanges in a manner that accomplishes the objective, and diminishes the possibility that anyone will be needlessly hurt. She will help you stay in control, deal with difficult or irrational behaviour in others, and prevent you from doing or saying things that could get you into trouble.

Length of Session: 3 hours  APPROVED FOR 3.0 LEARNING HOURS OR .3 CEUS

Learning Outcomes:
1. Understand what is meant by the term “difficult people”;
2. Recognize common patterns of communication that can produce difficult conversations and the underlying factors that make them difficult;
3. Explore the art of self-control and learn a helpful self-management strategy to manage your own reactions to difficult conversations and difficult people;
4. Learn processes and skills that TRs can use to defuse and buy-out of power struggles with angry and defensive individuals;
5. Deal with unfair tactics – learn a skill TRs can use to confront and limit-set destructive angry behaviour; and
6. Recognize and apply a model for dealing with difficult conversations with colleagues, individuals who may report to you, as well as individuals and family members who participate in the programs you offer and services you deliver.

Part Two:

Session Title: BCTRA – Advancing the Profession through Strategic Planning and Branding

Session Length: 60 minutes APPROVED FOR 1.0 LEARNING HOUR OR .1 CEU

Session Description: Using input from the members gained using open space technology, the Board of BCTRA completed Strategic Planning and Branding initiatives over the last year. This session will inform members of the work that was completed and will outline strategic initiatives the Board and it’s committees will undertake to further the growth and development of the profession of TR within BC. The Branding initiatives that will be discussed to solidify and raise the profile of TR in BC, include advocacy, building community connections, increasing competence and ensuring resources are available to the members. This session supports BCTRA’s commitment to advance the profession and keep members apprised of the work that has happened at the Board and Committee levels over the past year as well as the upcoming one.

Session Learning Objectives:

  1. Explain and impart the significant work the BCTRA Board has completed this year with the

assistance of a strategist and branding expert.

  1. Outline the strategic initiatives that the BCTRRA Board and committees will on in the next year.
  2. Outline the opportunities for members to become active in the association through volunteering

by committees and task groups.

  1. Outline the work that the BCTRA Board will continue to undertake to complete the second and

third year of the strategic plan.

 Part Three:

Presentation Title: Do the Grind Blind.  A Collaborative Hiking Adventure Between Therapeutic Recreation and Blind Beginnings

 

Presentation Length:  90 minutes APPROVED FOR 1.5 LEARNING HOURS OR .15 CEUS

Session Description:  Hiking the strenuous Grouse Grind with little or no sight?  Why? Why not?  Anyone who is visually impaired has the right to try any activity, including the grueling, steep, bumpy, root filled 2.5 kilometre trail to the top of Grouse Mountain.  With support and lots of direction, anything can happen.  For children and youth who are visually impaired, having a new and unique experience that they can tell their friends about is truly important for healthy growth, development and self-esteem. Discover the impact of a hiking program that was developed from a partnership between Recreation Therapy at Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children and Blind Beginnings.

Learning Outcomes:

The participants will learn:

  1. The impact of developing networks and building community partnerships between Recreation Therapists/TRs and community partners
  2. The importance of the role these partnerships play in improving leisure access to persons with disabilities
  3. Gain awareness of the importance for youth who are visually impaired to participate in a unique hiking adventure
  4. Gain insight into what was involved in the planning stages to execute this event
  5. Understand strategies that Recreation Therapists/TRs can use to support participants and their sighted guides before and during the hike
