Half-Day Workshop: Pole Walking – Improving Balance, Mobility, Core Strength & Weight Management for Your Clients

Synopsis of the workshop. 

Learn how to use specialized walking pole for rehabilitation as well as health and wellness programs. PT/OTs prescribe ACTIVATOR Poles as an alternative to canes and to limit the use of walker (when appropriate) and refer to RTs to teach the techniques to clients. In this course, RTs can learn about the research of the ACTIVATOR poles and the techniques for conditions including; Parkinson’s, Stroke, ABI and Older Adults. Find out how RTs have developed fun and effective seated, standing and walking programs using ACTIVATOR Poles. For Health and Wellness Programs, learn how the Urban Poling Poles are highly effective for employee wellness, mental health and weight management program.

Agenda for the Workshop:

  • Review of researched benefits.
  • Activator technique for stability
  • Seated and standing exercises
  • Tips for group programs for less active older adults.
  • Urban poling technique for weight management, mental health and wellness programs.

 

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to identify 10 researched benefits of walking poles for rehabilitation and 10 researched benefits for wellness programs.
  2. Participants will be able to adjust and understand the features of specialized walking poles for rehabilitation and another type of poles for wellness.
  3. Participants will be able to teach the Activator technique for rehabilitation and the Urban Poling/Nordic walking technique for weight management and wellness/health services.
  4. Participants will be able to perform 10 seated, 10 standing and 10 gait retraining exercises using poles.
  5. Participants will be able to identify 10 guidelines for setting up group poling programs for rehab and less active older adults in retirement to assisted living.

Biography of Workshop Presenter: Mandy Shintani, BSc (OT) MA  of Urban Poling Inc.

Mandy has been an occupational therapist for 30 years and has her Master’s Degree in Gerontology. Twelve years ago she co-developed the ACTIVATOR poles (patent pending) and technique specifically for rehabilitation which are now being prescribed extensively in hospitals and clinics across Canada and also internationally.   She is an international presenter and recently spoke at the international 200 years of Parkinson’s disease in Australia and the Fall Prevention Conference in Canada.  She has been interviewed by the Globe and Mail, CBC, Toronto Sun and Zoomer Magazine.  She was a finalist for the Women of Distinction Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
