Continuing education and professional development ensure that practitioners are knowledgeable about current therapeutic recreation issues, developments, research, and best practice. BCTRA is committed to providing access to quality education opportunities for all members, and supports the attainment of their CEUs within the province. BCTRA members are currently required to attain twelve (12) hours of continuing education units (CEU) over one year.
All CEUs will be based on the NCTRC Job Analysis Knowledge Area Items as outlined by NCTRC and approved by BCTRA as recommended by the Steering Committee.
All sessions must be at least 1 hour in length to qualify for credit. Participants are required to be there at the start of the session and remain to the end. At more formal conferences and workshops, you may be required to sign in and sign out of each session to prove your attendance for the whole session before you can earn your CEU (e.g., sign your signature on a form, scan an ID badge, turn in a ticket/coupon, or CEU form, etc).
You may also choose to attend a workshop where there is no formal CEU process available (worksite sessions, rural settings, video or teleconferences, etc). BCTRA has created this form for your use to take to workshops and conferences where an official CEUtranscript or CEU process is not available. BCTRA accepts workshops put on by recreation therapy associations, recreation and leisure associations, hospital and health authorities, community agencies, universities and other allied health disciplines. However, the sessions must also be relevant to recreation therapy (e.g. recreation therapy job tasks, competencies, scope of practice, etc).
BCTRA will begin random audits when you renew your membership each April starting in 2011. If you are audited you may be required to submit copies of your CEU forms/CEU transcripts to BCTRA. It is a good idea to keep a copy of the workshop flyers or conference brochures with 1) a write up of the session, along with 2) the session objectives. If there are ever any discrepancies as to how the workshop title relates to TR, or if it is of high enough quality to meet the CEU requirements, you will be able to show more information. This may be especially important for people with CTRS or other certifications.
The downloadable CEU Form (PDF) and further instructions can be found on the "CEU Form" page, accessible from the Member Menu (after you have logged in).
